Petco Park
Ballpark steel is public facing, heavily loaded, constantly used and often installed on a schedule dictated by a season rather than a construction calendar.
About the project
Petco Park sits in the middle of Downtown San Diego, surrounded by streets, hotels, offices and the East Village neighborhood. Working there means working inside a live urban block with limited staging area, controlled access and a schedule shaped by the events calendar.
Venue steel spans an unusually wide range within a single facility. Structural framing carries seating, concourse and support loads. Miscellaneous metals appear throughout in the form of guardrails, platforms, equipment supports, access structures and infill framing. Public facing elements are held to an appearance standard that back of house steel is not.
What makes this category of work distinct is that a large portion of it happens around an operating facility. Crowd safety, guest sightlines, access control and the need to leave the venue fully functional between work windows all shape how the steel is fabricated, delivered and installed.
Conditions that shaped the work
- Downtown site with minimal staging and controlled street access
- Work windows shaped by the event and season calendar
- Public facing appearance standards on visible steel
- Coordination with multiple trades in a compressed footprint
