Exposed steel is held to a different standard than steel behind drywall. Weld appearance, surface quality, tolerance, alignment and handling all become part of the deliverable, and none of that can be added at the end.
AESS is a fabrication decision, not a paint decision
The most common failure on exposed steel is treating it like ordinary structural steel until the finish stage, then trying to fix appearance with filler and coating. It does not work. Weld contour, splatter, grind marks, mill marks, handling damage, fastener selection and member alignment all have to be controlled from the moment material enters the shop.
We fabricate to the exposure category the architect specified, with the surface preparation, weld treatment and tolerance appropriate to how closely the steel will actually be viewed. A truss forty feet overhead and a handrail people touch daily are not the same requirement, and pretending they are wastes money on one and disappoints on the other.
Protecting the finish through erection
Beautiful steel that arrives scratched is a problem nobody wants to own. Exposed members require different handling, different rigging, different protection during transport and different erection practice than ordinary framing. Slings, chokers and connection points are chosen so that the finish survives the trip and the pick.
Because we both fabricate and erect, that responsibility stays in one place. There is no argument about whether the damage happened in the shop, on the truck or in the air.
Working with the design team
Exposed steel benefits enormously from early conversation. Connection expression, fastener visibility, member proportion, splice location, transition detailing and finish system are all design decisions with fabrication consequences. We would rather discuss them during design development than receive drawings showing a connection that cannot be made the way it is drawn.

What does AESS actually cost compared to standard steel?
It varies with exposure category and complexity, but exposed steel meaningfully exceeds standard structural steel because of the added labor in weld treatment, surface preparation, tolerance control and handling. Specifying a higher category than the viewing distance requires is where budgets get wasted.
Can you match steel on an existing building?
Usually yes. We evaluate the existing profile, finish and connection expression, and fabricate to match as closely as the available material and current code allow. Older sections are sometimes no longer produced, in which case we identify the nearest available alternative.
Do you handle the architectural finish?
We provide surface preparation and shop primer, and we coordinate specialty finishes including hot dip galvanizing, powder coating and architectural paint systems through qualified applicators. Weathering steel and clear coated finishes require their own planning, which we discuss during submittals.
