Steel recycling and sustainability

Steel is the most recycled construction material on earth, and we treat it that way.

Every fabrication shop produces drop and cut off. What happens to it is a choice. Ours goes back into the supply chain rather than into a landfill, and we help our clients document the diversion.

Why steel recycling matters on your project

Structural steel is recycled at a higher rate than any other construction material. Domestic structural steel typically carries a high recycled content already, and virtually all of it can be recovered again at the end of a building life. That makes the steel package one of the easier places to demonstrate real environmental performance rather than a marketing claim.

For projects pursuing green building certification, construction waste diversion and recycled content documentation both matter. Steel usually helps on both counts, and the documentation is straightforward when the fabricator keeps records as work happens.

What we do in our shop

  • Nesting and yield planning. Cut lists are planned to reduce drop before the saw ever runs, which lowers both waste and material cost.
  • Segregated scrap handling. Carbon steel, stainless and aluminum are kept separate so each stream retains value and is recycled properly.
  • Regular recovery. Shop scrap is delivered to recycling facilities on an ongoing basis rather than accumulating on site.
  • Reuse of usable stock. Serviceable remnants are catalogued and pulled for miscellaneous metals and repair work instead of being scrapped.

Demolition and tear out steel

On retrofit, renovation and repair projects we remove existing steel members, railings, stairs and platforms. That material has value. We coordinate its recovery rather than sending it to a mixed debris box, and we can provide the tickets your waste management plan requires.

Documentation for your green building submittal

If your project is tracking construction waste diversion or recycled content, tell us at award. We will provide recycling records and available mill documentation for the material we furnish so your consultant is not chasing paperwork at the end of the job.

Sell us your scrap

Contractors and property owners in San Diego County occasionally end up with structural steel, railing or plate they need moved. Call the shop and describe what you have. In many cases we can arrange recovery.
