Tilt up construction steel, from embeds to roof framing
Tilt up is the dominant delivery method for industrial buildings in this region, and the steel scope inside it is easy to underestimate. Getting the embeds right before the panels are cast is where the schedule is won.
Embeds set the schedule
On a tilt up building, a substantial amount of the steel work happens before anything is standing. Embed plates, inserts, weld plates, angles and connection hardware are cast into the panels, and once the concrete cures, their locations are permanent.
That makes coordination and timing critical. Embeds have to be fabricated, delivered and verified against the panel drawings before casting begins. A missed or misplaced embed becomes a drilled and epoxied retrofit at best, and a structural review at worst. We treat embed delivery as its own milestone with its own deadline rather than folding it into general fabrication.
Panel connections and erection support
Once panels are lifted and braced, the steel scope moves to connecting them to each other and to the structure. Panel to panel connections, ledger angles, drag connections, chord and collector elements and diaphragm attachments all transfer the loads that hold the building together in an earthquake.
This work is inspected closely, and it happens on a compressed schedule while panel bracing is still in place. Crews that have done it before move through it without holding up the rest of the job.
Interior steel
Inside the shell, tilt up buildings carry columns, girders, roof framing, joist support, mezzanines, equipment platforms, dock equipment framing, canopies and screen supports. On distribution and manufacturing projects the interior steel scope frequently exceeds what people expect from the outside.
What this scope covers

- Dock equipment framing and door supports
- Canopies, screens and exterior appurtenances
- Mezzanines and equipment platforms
- Miscellaneous metals throughout the shell
Where it applies

| Connection types | Welded plate, bolted, cast in insert and post installed anchor conditions |
| Inspection | Panel connection welding and anchor installation coordinated with special inspection |
| Sequencing | Steel scheduled around panel casting, lifting, bracing and brace removal |
| Roof framing | Girders, beams, joist bearing and infill coordinated with the joist supplier |
| Finishes | Shop primer standard, galvanizing available for exterior and wash down conditions |
Requirements vary by jurisdiction, occupancy and specification. We confirm the governing criteria with your design team rather than assuming.
About tilt up construction steel
How early do you need panel drawings?
As early as possible. Embeds must be fabricated and on site before casting, so the panel drawings drive our first delivery milestone. On fast track industrial projects this is frequently the tightest deadline in the entire steel scope.
Can you fix a missed or misplaced embed?
Usually, with engineering involvement. Post installed anchors, added plates and modified connections can often resolve it, but the fix has to be reviewed by the engineer of record rather than improvised in the field.
Do you work in the Otay Mesa industrial corridor?
Regularly. Our Spring Valley shop is close to the South Bay and border industrial areas, which makes delivery and crew logistics straightforward for projects there.
